Here at the 45th parallel, as the mercury starts its seasonal descent, you can count on Montanans to turn up the burner on their sense of humor. Autumn in the Big Sky state is marked by quirky events that will hopefully appeal to your journalistic penchant for offbeat angles.
- What the Hay Festival. Fine art meets fine ranching. Inspired local agrarians create massive hay-bale sculptures with titles like: Cook-Hay Monster, Hay-lery Clinton and Har-Hay Davidson. and Tour the 20-mile exhibit through central Montana's amber landscape.
- John Colter Run. In 1806, explorer John Colter took leave from the Lewis & Clark expedition to trap beaver at the headwaters of the Missouri. After an altercation with the
Blackfoot natives, Colter was left naked, running for his life. 200 years later you can retrace the escape path of this historic streaker. Clothing is mandatory.
- Running of the Sheep. In the thriving metropolis of Reed Point (population 185), locals and intrepid visitors do as their Pamplona counterparts. Dressed in white, donning berets, participants run from a herd of wooly sheep instead of sharp-horned bovines. Advice from the experienced suggests the importance of staying in front, lest things get messy.
